What is Tobacco Caye?

A backpacker's haven, Tobacco Caye sits right atop the Belize barrier reef a few miles off the coast of Dangriga.

With several small hotels and dive operations on this charming 5 acre island this is a great location to meet travelers from around the world. A thatched roof bar just a few feet from the waves is an ideal spot for sipping on cool Caribbean rum concoctions and chatting with the residents and fellow travelers.

At only about 200 feet wide and 400 feet long, the atmosphere is intimate and social, but relaxing and friendly (you can circle the island in less than 5 minutes). About 20 Belizeans reside here permanently, but there's no school, so children spend the week on a nearby island, and come home only on the weekends to stay with their families.

Avid divers, snorkelers, educational groups and hammock swingers converge on Tobacco Caye to enjoy its rustic, tropical atmosphere with the ability to snorkel right off the beach and in the neighboring South Water Caye Marine Reserve.

How to Get There

The typical route is to take a bus to the largely Garifuna town of Dangriga on the Southern Coast and hire a water taxi to take you to the small island. Expect to pay about US$30 per person round trip. You can find the water taxis right downtown by the foot of the main bridge across the street from the Riverside Restaurant. From there it’s about a 30-minute boat ride to the island.

Once you arrive just ask for directions to Lana's on the Reef - you can't miss it. We'll be waiting.
